The "Show me, Tell me," questions

Bas Fountain

The show me, tell me questions are a set of 21 questions relating to the car, two of which you will be asked as part of your driving test. 14 are "Tell Me," for which you only need to answer verbally: you don't have to physically do anything, although for three of them, you might need to lift the bonnet. The other 7 are "Show Me," and for these, you must physically operate the relevant control.

The purpose of them is to demonstrate that you know a basic minimum about your car: routine checks and maintenance that you have to carry out between services, such as making sure that the tyres are safe, and knowledge of what all the controls do. You don't want to be working out how to wash the front screen just after the world's biggest truck has covered your car in mud!

Over the next days and weeks, I will go over each of these questions and explain what it means, and how you should answer the question on the day of the test.
